FEO RIVERA

They named me Feo—

Ugly;

They named my sister Bonita—

Pretty;

That's the punch line, I'm sure.

This is not my neighborhood,

This place of second-class citizens, who speak Spanglish,

And grow up aspiring to be what they cannot be.

I hated America.

I hated not being American.

Then you came, looking like everything non-American;

Then you came, speaking like everyone American:

Of hope, of liberty, of dreams—

Held in your clenched fist.

Your America is awash in neon lights;

And my America is ugly – mi América es feo.
For a school project, we were asked to make up three characters with names to symbolize their personality, and then write a short, non-rhyming poem that summed up their life. The first line, as you can see, is his name, which also doubles as the title of the poem. We took this idea from the book of poems called "Spoon River Anthology".

This one is about a character called Feo Rivera, Feo meaning "ugly" in Spanish, and Rivera being a commonplace Spanish surname. And before you get mad at me for naming a character "ugly", be aware that it is a real name.

Anyhow, tell me your thoughts!

I think I've heard of Spoon River Anthology somewhere before. I like it a lot by the way. :D
