What do you suppose a world would be like, had dragons and magic truly existed in the Dark Ages? Suppose also that these dragons continued to survive into a modern, 21st century world. If, in that case, wouldn't it be logical to assume that this magic and dragons would be more affective in war than guns and tanks? There would still be weaponry, of course, and modern warfare. However, it would also make sense that there would be a special unit of humans who would utilize the important resources of the mythical kind.
Dragons could be much more effective than a horse or a car, or even a plane, when it came to fast travel. And say that dragons were not the only type of creature that could be used in such a way. Yes, surely there are many other mythical creatures that could provide transportation. Some of their names would be more familiar to you, such as the griffin, the gargoyle, or the unicorn. Many others may be completely foreign to you, such as the peryton, vanara, basilisk or roc. In this case, wouldn't all of these creatures, who were not human or something altogether different, have some sort of a collective name?
It might be something very creative, such as mythikin or weyr, or something to that extent. They may simply be called mounts, or that same word in a different language. But in this case, they will be called the otherkin. Not exactly the most creative or logical of naming choices. The truth is simply that no one knows where the term came from, although there is one childish rumor going around that the name was first uttered by a drunk, who came up with the word as an alternative for "the others", as referring to those who weren't human. And since then, if the rumor is true, the name stuck.
And of course one would imagine that certain humans would be raised to learn the art of magic, so that they could learn to ride into battle on these creatures. It might be a talented passed down through family lines, or even taught to the public through institutions such as military schools.
It wouldn't be a secret kept from the public eye, of course, because although the government may try to hide the existence as things such as aliens or assassination conspiracies, even politicians would find it quite a challenge to try to hide a flock of dragons.
In every other way, however, despite the existence of dragons, griffins and magical abilities, this world would be in every way the same to yours. People would still be raised in families, and go to school, and then eventually go to work. They would learn to raise families of their own. Shopping malls, rainy days, non-profit organizations and sporting events would still exist. Regrettably, wars between nations would still exist. Their entire lives would not revolve around dragons or magic, as they would be as used to these things as you may be to people owning dogs as pets. Mundane people would still live mundane lives. Some people would just also occasionally ride phoenixes and cast spells on one another.
This is the sort of world that Isotta Brown grew up in.
